CO-FOUNDER of Apple Computer Steve Wozniak confessed that he is not super pleased with Iphone design. He can see why some of the compromises have been made and this is of course only the first generation device. He also can not understand why Apple gave exclusive to Cingular, an unfavoured player in theAmerican cell market.

Smart phones are not so smart, said Steve, when we caught up with him in Monte Carlo, as many things you do are illogical. Apple will have to teach the users how to use their phones as many things are totally new. Tapping fingers on your mobile screen is natural and we agree but it won't be as easy as the presentation shows.

The Iphone is just a first of many so the next Iphone will definitely be improved and will fix the flaws in the design of the first. Overall Steve Wozniak likes the Iphone but he would like to see some missing parts such as 3G support inside the package.

Na první reakce na včera představený Apple iPhone jsem čekal velice netrpělivě. I když se webem nese spousta pochvalného textu (na základě prezentace obrázků a videa a nulových zkušeností s tímto zařízením), najdou se i lidé, kteří o novém iPhonu pochybují.

Noted analyst and Engadget pal Michael Gartenberg stated that the iPhone is first party software ONLY – i.e. not a smartphone by conventional terms, being that a smartphone is a platform device that allows software to be installed. That means hungry power-users – you know, those people ready and willing to plunk down $600 for an 8GB musicphone – won't be able to extend the functionality of their phone any more than Apple (but thankfully not Cingular) dictates. That's right…apparently the iPhone uses, and no I'm not joking…EDGE. That's right, your iPhone might as well be a dial-up modem. Not ~800kbps like I've been getting from EVDO for over a year and a half, or the faster EVDO Rev A stuff rolling out now. Definitely not the ~1mbps HSDPA / UMTS speed like all the fancy new Cingular smartphones. Just good old 80–110kbps EDGE, a worse connection than I had on my Treo 600 in 2003.

Smartphone bez hardwarové klávesnice, s nestabilním operačním systémem nulté generace, bez dostupného software, to není konkurence pro Symbian či Windows Mobile. To je jablečná sranda či marmeláda… Bliká to a skáče tam „pumlíč“, ale nic to neumí. Navíc to bude drahé, bez 3G, bez video hovorů, bez klávesnice. US$ 599 za dotovaný telefon je pro američany opravdu hodně. Apple stěží dosáhne na 1% trhu, stejně jako má v oblasti počítačů. Zanedbatelný podíl… Až budete za nějaký ten rok volat kamarádovi, a tomu bude pořád padat spojení, už víte proč – kernel panic na OS X Mobile…

Mně osobně se ten telefon velice líbí .. ale i já mám, po opadnutí prvního nadšení a návratu logického myšlení, své pochybnosti.

• Jednak o použitelnosti při běžné práci typu SMSkování, psaní e-mailů .. Prezentaci tohoto jsem neviděl a tak o tom nic nevím.
• Druhou věcí je spolupráce s Officem, zejména s MS Outlookem. Od svého zařízení totiž očekávám synchronizaci mailů s Outlookem.
• A třetí pochybnost mám o softwarové rozšiřitelnosti, v žádné specifikaci jsem neviděl ani podporu Javy, jen widgetů a to je pro chytrý nebo PDA telefon trochu málo.

Jak to tedy s tím iPhonem bude, to se dozvíme .. Počkejme do léta .. d8-D

Řekl Nigel Clifford, CEO společnosti Symbian v rozhovoru pro TV pořad NetEco na DigiWorld 2006. Konstatoval, že Symbian má nyní podíl 65–70% na trhu s chytrými telefony a 4–5% na celkovém trhu s mobilními telefony.

A dále pak řekl, že ambicí Symbianu je získat vyšší podíl na trhu a že toho chtějí dosáhnout snížením licenčních poplatků za Symbian a následně uvedením velkého množství levných mobilních zařízení. Více viz video.

Na serveru SymbianWatch dnes vyšel poměrně rozsáhlý rozhovor s panem Matsem Lindoffem, CTO společnosti Sony Ericsson a s paní Mimmis Olssonovou, mluvčí společnosti v oblasti mobilního obsahu a manažerkou pro komunikaci pro Sony Ericsson Developer World. A je to zajímavé čtení, moc zajímavé .. d8-D

Mats Lindoff: One year ago 9% of the total phone market were smartphones. The prediction is that in 2009 smartphones will be 27% of the total market. That's a pretty huge volume and given Sony Ericsson's growth – as proven by the record profits and sales in the third quarter 2006 – we'd expect our own share of that market to be substantial by 2009.

By acquiring UIQ Technology we will further invest and exploit the full potential of UIQ on Symbian OS for phone vendors, mobile operators, developers and consumers. UIQ will continue to be licensed to other manufacturers on equal terms to all its licensees, including Sony Ericsson itself. Our main ambitions for UIQ is to establish it as a leading UI (framework) in the mobile phone industry licensed by several phone vendors. Thanks to UIQ 3 it has been possible for us to use the same code platform to create phones addressing different target segments. The M600 and W950 are important steps for reaching out to new consumer segments and achieve higher sales volumes than what has previously been possible with the P series of smartphones. And you will see more from us in this area in 2007.

Na serveru C|Net News vyšel rozhovor se Stevem Ballmerem, CEO společnosti Microsoft. Řeč byla o Vistách, o životě po nich .. d8-D a v rozhovoru padla také otázka na chytré telefony a Steve se rozpovídal:

Let's say the PC market is roughly 200 million units these days, and let's say the PC market goes great guns over the next several years and grows 14 percent or 15 percent a year. Those are big numbers. You go great guns, China booms. You get maybe over 400 million in a few years. The cell phone market is already a billion units a year, and the truth of the matter is that what I'll call „smart devices,“ as a percentage, the total is rising dramatically.

When it comes to smart devices, there really aren't that many players. Basically, you have Nokia/Symbian, you've got us. Actually, I'll be so bold as to say that the two of us stand out in that area. Then you have some guys who are more niche players--Palm is more of a niche player, (Research In Motion's) BlackBerry is more of a niche player, those Linux devices from Motorola, particularly in China, (mean it) is more of a niche player.

You have some things intermediate between dumb and smart devices – kind of the J2ME-type phones – but when you talk about real smart devices, there's really two guys who I think are broad frontline players and have most of the share. It often surprises people when we tell them how much we outsell BlackBerry. BlackBerry, because they are more popular in the United States, people assume that they're quite popular. The truth of the matter is we actually outsell BlackBerry many factors to one, that's worldwide, yeah, absolutely.

Michael Mace, ředitel konzultantské společnosti Rubicon Consulting a dříve velká šajba ve společnosti Palm a PalmSource ve svém článku nazvaném Palm gets its OS back mj. napsal i toto:

Palm OS on Windows? Most important, Palm has the right to put Palm OS Garnet on any other operating system. As others have pointed out, that means they could create a new Linux-based device and run the Palm OS applications base on it. I believe they can also put Palm OS Garnet on Windows Mobile, which is going to turn the stomachs of many Palm OS enthusiasts but is extremely interesting to me.

To jsou slova Prima Krithivasana, ředitele Divize regionálních operátorů společnosti Dopod v ANZ & Indii v souvislosti s oznámením, že prodej Dopodu společnosti HTC za 150 milonů USD je téměř dokončen, obě společnosti podepsaly „memorandum of understanding“ a nyní se čeká již jen na schválení vládou.

Po Qteku tedy více méně končí i Dopod a dalšími na řadě jsou i-mate a O2. To je i důvod, proč i-mate narychlo začalo spolupráci s Inventecem a TechFaith Wireless a proč O2 začalo spolupráci s Asusem.

Sice to není úplně aktuální citát, protože jej Peter Chou, CEO společnosti HTC řekl již koncem srpna, nějak jsem ale pozapoměl se o něm zmínit.

Věta byla vyřčena v souvislosti se Symbianem. Společnost HTC je sice dlouholetým partnerem Microsoftu na poli mobilních technologií a v zařízeních HTC je používán operační systém Windows Mobile, pokud by ale byla ze strany operátorů poptávka, právě Symbian by mohl nabídku operačních systémů rozšířit.

V současné době ale společnost HTC v nabízení zařízení s OS Symbian nevidí svou velkou příležitost, neboť je v tomto sektoru trhu velká konkurence ostatních výrobců.

Další témata rozhovoru se týkala podpory přehrávání digitální hudby v mobilních zařízeních společnosti HTC (v této oblasti spolupracuje s Microsoftem a také s Verizonem) a postupného ukončení podpory Infračerveného portu u těchto zařízení.
