PRVNÍ REAKCE: Apple iPhone

Na první reakce na včera představený Apple iPhone jsem čekal velice netrpělivě. I když se webem nese spousta pochvalného textu (na základě prezentace obrázků a videa a nulových zkušeností s tímto zařízením), najdou se i lidé, kteří o novém iPhonu pochybují.

Noted analyst and Engadget pal Michael Gartenberg stated that the iPhone is first party software ONLY – i.e. not a smartphone by conventional terms, being that a smartphone is a platform device that allows software to be installed. That means hungry power-users – you know, those people ready and willing to plunk down $600 for an 8GB musicphone – won't be able to extend the functionality of their phone any more than Apple (but thankfully not Cingular) dictates. Other unfortunate realities about the device:

That's right…apparently the iPhone uses, and no I'm not joking…EDGE. That's right, your iPhone might as well be a dial-up modem. Not ~800kbps like I've been getting from EVDO for over a year and a half, or the faster EVDO Rev A stuff rolling out now. Definitely not the ~1mbps HSDPA / UMTS speed like all the fancy new Cingular smartphones. Just good old 80–110kbps EDGE, a worse connection than I had on my Treo 600 in 2003.

It’s funny that the iPhone should so clearly have helped me to better recognize the terrific accomplishments that Palm has delivered with our Treo. It may not be immediately perceived to be quite as “cool” as an iPhone but the fact is that the Treo clearly deserves the praise and success that it has already achieved.

Smartphone bez hardwarové klávesnice, s nestabilním operačním systémem nulté generace, bez dostupného software, to není konkurence pro Symbian či Windows Mobile. To je jablečná sranda či marmeláda… Bliká to a skáče tam „pumlíč“, ale nic to neumí. Navíc to bude drahé, bez 3G, bez video hovorů, bez klávesnice. US$ 599 za dotovaný telefon je pro američany opravdu hodně. Apple stěží dosáhne na 1% trhu, stejně jako má v oblasti počítačů. Zanedbatelný podíl… Až budete za nějaký ten rok volat kamarádovi, a tomu bude pořád padat spojení, už víte proč – kernel panic na OS X Mobile…

Mně osobně se ten telefon velice líbí .. ale i já mám, po opadnutí prvního nadšení a návratu logického myšlení, své pochybnosti.

• Jednak o použitelnosti při běžné práci typu SMSkování, psaní e-mailů .. Prezentaci tohoto jsem neviděl a tak o tom nic nevím.
• Druhou věcí je spolupráce s Officem, zejména s MS Outlookem. Od svého zařízení totiž očekávám synchronizaci mailů s Outlookem.
• A třetí pochybnost mám o softwarové rozšiřitelnosti, v žádné specifikaci jsem neviděl ani podporu Javy, jen widgetů a to je pro chytrý nebo PDA telefon trochu málo.

Jak to tedy s tím iPhonem bude, to se dozvíme .. Počkejme do léta .. d8-D
